Planning a trip

How do I start planning a safari with ELMAG SAFARIS?

Send us your travel dates, how many adults and children are coming, and roughly what you would like to see. The quickest route is WhatsApp on +254 717 635 727. From there we come back with a route, a vehicle and accommodation options.

How far ahead should I book?

For the Maasai Mara in the July to October migration period, and for the Christmas and New Year weeks, lodge availability tightens early and it is worth starting several months ahead. Outside those peaks, shorter notice is often workable. Exact lead times vary by lodge and season.

Can you build an itinerary around my dates rather than a fixed departure?

Yes. Every itinerary ELMAG SAFARIS runs is built to the group travelling. See the package structures for the shape of a 3, 4, 5, 7 or 10-day trip, then tell us what to change.

Do you organise the whole trip, or only the driving?

We plan the route, arrange the vehicle and driver-guide, book accommodation on your behalf, and handle airport and lodge transfers. Flights, visas, insurance and personal items are yours to arrange.

Where is ELMAG SAFARIS based?

Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County, Kenya — a highland town at roughly 2,400 m on the edge of the Kerio Valley. We drive from here across Kenya and into East Africa.

Prices, payments and confirmation

Why are prices shown as?

Because a Kenya safari price depends on the season, the number of travellers, the lodges you choose and current park fees. We publish no prices at all until the owner supplies approved rates — instead, send your dates and group and we will quote the route properly.

How much does a safari cost?

Every trip is priced for your dates, group size, lodges and current park fees, so there is no fixed price list. Send your enquiry and your quotation arrives on WhatsApp.

What payment methods do you accept?

The accepted payment methods and account details are written in your quotation and booking confirmation. Only pay to the details we send you, and phone us on +254 717 635 727 if you want to double-check them.

What deposit is required?

The deposit and the balance date for your trip are set out in your quotation and booking confirmation, so you know the amounts before you pay anything.

What are your cancellation terms?

See Terms & Cancellation. The cancellation scale for your trip is written in your quotation and booking confirmation before you pay.

How do I know my booking is confirmed?

A booking is confirmed only when you receive written confirmation from ELMAG SAFARIS after your deposit is received. If you are ever unsure about a message or payment request, call us on +254 717 635 727 before paying.

Wildlife, seasons and destinations

When is the best time to travel to Kenya for a safari?

Broadly, the dry months — roughly late June to October, and January to March — give shorter grass, easier roads and wildlife concentrated around water. The wildebeest migration usually reaches the Maasai Mara around July and stays into October, though the exact timing varies with rainfall. See the planning guide.

Will I definitely see the animals I want to see?

Nobody can guarantee a wildlife sighting. Guides work from experience of the season, the water and the grass, and they know which parts of a reserve are producing at the time you travel. We will tell you honestly what a route does and does not give you the best chance of.

Which destinations does ELMAG SAFARIS cover?

Lake Baringo, Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha, Nairobi National Park, Samburu, Maasai Mara, Meru and Rimoi, plus cross-border East Africa routes on request. See destinations.

How much driving is involved?

More than most first-time visitors expect. Nairobi to the Maasai Mara is roughly 5 to 6 hours depending on the route and conditions; Samburu and Meru are longer. We plan road time into the itinerary so no day is a surprise. See the planning guide.

Families, groups and accessibility

Do you organise family safaris with children?

Yes. Children's ages matter more than anything else when we plan a family route — driving days get shorter, lodge choice changes, and some activities have minimum ages. Tell us the ages in your enquiry.

Can you handle corporate groups and schools?

Yes. Multi-vehicle movements, one contact for the group organiser, and itineraries built around a fixed programme rather than the other way round. Group sizes are set when you enquire.

Can you accommodate dietary requirements and medical needs?

Tell us in your enquiry and we will pass them to the lodges with your booking. Specific dietary provision is confirmed per property.

Is a safari suitable for someone with reduced mobility?

Much of it can be, with the right vehicle, lodge and route — game drives are largely done from the vehicle. Some lodges and some activities are less accessible than others. Tell us the requirements and we will confirm what is genuinely workable rather than promise it.

Iten, transfers and logistics

How do I get to Iten?

The usual route is a flight to Eldoret International Airport, then roughly an hour by road. ELMAG SAFARIS runs airport transfers from Eldoret and further afield. See transport.

Do you provide airport transfers on their own, without a safari?

Yes. Airport transfers are a service in their own right. Send the flight number, date, arrival airport and destination and we will confirm the pickup.

Do you support runners and training camps in Iten?

Yes — athlete transfers, daily training transport, accommodation and rest-day outings. See Iten running & training camps. Coaching, medical services and camp placements are arranged by your club or camp.

What vehicles do you use?

ELMAG SAFARIS runs pop-top safari vans. Full vehicle specifications, seating numbers and luggage capacity are confirmed for your group — we do not publish specifications we cannot verify.

What happens if a flight is delayed?

Tell us your flight number so we can track it. How delays, waiting time and late-night arrivals are handled is confirmed in writing with your booking.
